Can a full learning assessment really help kids with learning difficulties?

Published by Melbourne Child Psychology & School Psychology Services, Port Melbourne

Learning difficulties are very common and can cause a lot of frustration for both children and parents…

And the interesting thing?

Kids with these challenges are often quite bright and capable…

They just tend to learn and process information a bit differently from their peers…

For example, they might be able to speak well yet struggle to express their thoughts in writing…

Some might mix up or reverse letters or words in sentences…

Some may have trouble with mental arithmetic…

And others may have difficulty focusing and concentrating…

But the hardest part?

They often start to notice the differences between how they learn and how their classmates learn very early on in primary school…

And this can impact their self-esteem, self-confidence and motivation for school and learning…

So if these issues are not identified as early as possible…

…and if the right support is not put in place at school and at home?

Things can get worse over time…

And this can lead to other problems like school avoidance or depression…

Which is why research evidence strongly supports EARLY identification and intervention to get the best long term outcomes.

But for MOST children with mild-to-moderate learning difficulties?

There’s a LOT that can be done to help…

IF parents and teachers have the right information…

It all comes down to answering these THREE key questions:

#1. What is ACTUALLY going on with their learning and processing skills?

(In other words, their specific “learning profile” of strengths and weaknesses.)

#2. What level are they are CURRENTLY achieving at with their academic skills?

(Compared with what is expected for their age and year level.)

and

#3. What are they POTENTIALLY capable of achieving?

That’s why most education experts recommend a “full learning assessment” with a psychologist as an important first step…

A full learning assessment will reveal the answers to these questions…

AND – most importantly – the results will determine the right learning support and strategies to put in place at school and at home…

Which enables parents to make more informed decisions about their child’s education…

So they can make the right changes as EARLY as possible…

Empower them with greater insight into how they learn…

And, ultimately, help them to reach their full learning potential.
